ACMA sets crosshairs on virus-removal telemarketers – Good Gear Guide
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) today announced a "targeted compliance campaign" targeting businesses that offer virus removal and technical support.
So far this year, nearly half the telemarketing-related complaints filed by people on the Do Not Call Register have been about calls from people ostensibly offering virus removal services, ACMA chairperson Chris Chapman said in a statement issued today. "The ACMA understands that while some businesses offer a legitimate virus prevention or removal service, many are falsely claiming to be related to reputable companies, such as Microsoft," said Chapman. "Telemarketers that are investigated by the ACMA run the risk of incurring penalties of up to $110,000 per day."
The ACMA is working with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers to identify "rogue telemarketers ", cooperating with international regulators on developing strategies to tackle this problem and working with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
