Bee population buzz – Examiner.com
Over the past few years there have been increasing reports of the diminishing bee populations in the US. No one seemed to have any idea why entire hives and colonies would die suddenly. At one point a virus was blamed, at another mites, still another time the blame was placed on fungus; even cell phones and pesticides have been blamed. It seems that a few of those things may have had a part to play in the overall decimation. There is a bee-attacking virus, that would normally have little effect on the colony, that has come into contact with a particular fungus that thrives in the hive environment to wreak havoc on the bees. This deadly duo work to inhibit the bees' normal digestion, and possibly how their brains work, and entire hives can collapse in a short period of time. Realizing that this combination might be a major reason for the die-offs of the bees, researchers are working hard to determine what else might be involved. This research will also lead in to research on why other insect breeds, like monarch butterflies, are also starting to see die-offs.
Most people think of bees and immediately think of honey, but bees have a far bigger role in our environment than just that sweet brown liquid. Bees are responsible for the pollination of a full third of all the food produced in the US. If all the bees were to suddenly disappear, we would have more than just a food crisis on our hands, a major part of our landscape would disappear, including our fruits and vegetables. Bee pollen and royal jelly are also produced by the bees. Royal jelly is believed to be a super food and have important properties related to strengthening the immune system. The research into royal jelly is extensive but scientists have yet to synthesize it in labs, which hints to its complexity.
Not all areas of the country are experiencing bee shocking levels of die deaths. In the Phoenix, AZ area, bees are thriving and making a buzz with their sometimes bad behavior. The area has seen an increase in the presence of aggressive Africanized honeybees. Companies like Africanized Bee Removal Specialists, Inc. in the Sun Valley have reported attacks from. There are also companies like CC Pollen Company that specialize in bee-produced products like pollen and royal jelly.
