Business Rundown: Area native stays local, opens Whitesboro business – Utica Observer Dispatch

A 25-year-old Frankfort resident recently made the decision that so many local young people don’t make – to stay in the Mohawk Valley and open his own business instead of leaving the area.

Anatoly Bondarchuk had a grand opening Monday for his BondarTech business at 22 Roosevelt Drive in Whitesboro, next to the Boulevard Diner. The business conducts computer repairs, sells custom-built computers and offers virus removal, hard-drive data recovery and other computer services, he said.

Services can be provided at businesses or in people’s homes, Bondarchuk said.

The company also offers small-business solutions – through small-business networking and Web design, he said.

While working for Utica National Insurance Group then Adjusters International, Bondarchuk also repaired computers as a hobby, but the hobby grew into a business opportunity, he said.

“I always worked with computers on the side,” he said. “It got to be almost a full-time job on top of my full-time job.”

Bondarchuk felt like he either had to leave the area to chase a dream technology job or start his own local business, and he chose the latter, he said.

Educated at Mohawk Valley Community College and SUNYIT, Bondarchuk does the work himself – along with a secretary – and works with a couple subcontractors, he said. He hopes to grow the size of the business over time, he said.

The grand opening, which is basically an open house with an opportunity to register to win a Netbook laptop, lasts until Friday, Nov. 12.

Martial arts center opens

UTICA – Straight Circle Martial Arts celebrated its grand opening Oct. 27, accompanied by officials from the Mohawk Valley Chamber of Commerce and city Mayor David Roefaro.

The ceremony took place at the facility at 53A Franklin Square in the city, and owner Bill Koenig performed demonstrations and offered advice on how to defend yourself, according to a news release.

Straight Circle martial arts features the Russian martial arts system of Systema, based on the work of the Russian special forces. The style’s main purpose is self-defense, but “the unique physical and breathing exercises offer an exciting and challenging way to better health and vitality for people of all ages.”

Adult and children’s classes are being developed.

For more information, call Koenig at 723-0066 or visit the website at www.straightcirclemartialarts.com.

Frasier Farm honored

MOHAWK – Of the 569 certified organic farmers that work with Colorado-based Horizon Organic, it was a local company that was recognized above all the rest this year.

Frasier Farm, a milk producing organic farm on Upper Deck Road, won the company’s 2010 Horizon Organic Producer Education (HOPE) Award, which recognizes farmers who create positive change in their communities by practicing and serving as a model for organic agriculture, according to a Horizon news release.

The owners of the farm, Harvey and Connie Frasier, were honored at Farm Aid’s 25th anniversary concert Oct. 2 at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

“It was just an honor and a blessing,” Connie Frasier said.

The couple, who have the help of nephews, several grown children and their 10-year old daughter, Connie Louise, transitioned to organic farming about 10 years ago, Connie said. As organic farmers, they do not use herbicides or pesticides and cannot use antibiotics on an animal that produces milk for Horizon.

“It’s a better way of life,” Connie Frasier said. “It’s a better income. It’s healthier for the animals and our family.”
