LAHORE – The dengue victims list further swelled on Thursday as six more patients, including four women, died in City’s hospitals on Thursday. The death tally has reached 286.
Besides taking six new lives, the deadly virus also forced another hundreds of Lahorites to land in hospitals. Out of these, 175 patients were confirmed as dengue sufferers.
Rahat Bano (58), a resident of Rajgarh, and Rafiqa Bibi (76), of Township, breathed their last at Mayo Hospital. Robina Bibi (45), of Green Town, lost her battle against the virus at Jinnah Hospital; Kiran (19), of Chungi Amarasadhu, died at Lahore General Hospital; and Muhammad Zahid (47), of Sodiwal; died at Services Hospital. The last victim on the day’s list was Zahid Bashir (27).
According to the Punjab Health Department, as many as 286 new cases were reported in Punjab including 175 in Lahore. As such total number of dengue patients in the province has risen to 18,058, of which, 15,410 are from Lahore. So far 17,795 dengue patients have recovered and discharged from various hospitals in Punjab including 15,229 in Lahore. He said that 1,538 dengue patients are under treatment in different hospitals of the province, out of which, 1,196 are in Lahore.
On Thursday, as many as 353 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals in Lahore after they had recovered. They included 99 from Mayo Hospital, 59 from LGH, 30 from Government Mian Munshi Hospital, 35 from Services Hospital, 17 from Jinnah Hospital, 14 from Kot Khawaja Saeed Hospital, 86 from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and 13 from Children’s Hospital.
Briefing the newsmen at the committee room of Services Hospital, Principal Services Institute of Medical Sciences Prof Faisal Masood said that training of young doctors and nurses regarding patients’ management and diagnosis of dengue was in progress at all teaching hospitals of Punjab. Director Health Information Management System Dr Anwar Janjua, MS Services Hospital Dr Muhammad Javed and other officers of health department were also present.
Prof Faisal Masood said that and training was being imparted to 125 doctors and nurses at Services Hospital daily. He said that Pakistani doctors were comparable with the trained doctors of any country. He said dengue virus has reduced due to effective steps of the government, hardworking of doctors and change in the weather.
However, death of dengue patients due to hemorrhage fever was a big challenge and experts were paying full attention to reduce the mortality rate. He further said that those already suffering from diabetes, blood pressure, cardiac and lever diseases needed special attention as mortality rate could be higher among these patients. He said that the threat of hemorrhagic fever increased among those affecting from dengue for the second time and these should immediately be shifted to the hospital. He said that hundred percent life of a patient could be saved through early diagnose and proper treatment of dengue hemorrhagic fever.
Meanwhile, a 3-member Sri Lankan team of medical experts visited Directorate General Health Services Punjab on Thursday where the DG Health Dr Aslam Chaudhry gave them a detailed briefing about the provincial plan prepared for dengue eradication and the steps taken for controlling the menace during the last one and half months. The Lankan team appreciated the efforts made by the provincial government and Health Department for the control of dengue virus and diagnostic and treatment arrangements for the patients at hospitals.
The experts advised that before the commencement of next monsoon season, a nationwide cleanliness campaign should be launched for the eradication of larvae and vector control of dengue.
They said that active participation of masses was necessary to avoid dengue epidemic in the next season. The experts said that for this purpose, cleanliness week should be observed in whole of the province during which special concentration be given to removal of stagnant water in and around the houses to check the mosquito breeding. The team comprises Dr Paba, Dr Kassum and Dr Risintha.
