FinallyFast.com May Owe You $17.90 – Seattle Weekly (blog)

FinallyFast.com is the sheisty website with the Tim and Eric-esque late-night commercials that's known for charging people once for its terrible PC virus-removal software, then again if they actually want to use it. Well, if you live in Washington and believed what the messy-haired young man to the right told you, you may have some beer money coming your way.

As announced by Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna's office on Tuesday, Ascentive, the company behind FinallyFast.com was found to have used deceptive marketing and fined $78,000 in penalties--plus, made to offer refunds to an estimated 5,500 customers, for a restitution bill just under $100,000.

The deal comes as part of a settlement to keep the case from proceeding any further in court.

The complaints against the company are a mile long and include: falsely claiming the product is recommended by Microsoft, performing scans that call nearly every bit of data found on a computer an "error," warning of impending harddrive doom in all scans no matter the outcome, installing permanent pop-ups and spyware and making it a nightmare to cancel one's account once a customer finds out the service sucks.

Of course that's after the fact that buying the product costs $17.90 up front, but will then cost more money to fix whatever bogus problems the "scan" finds.

For more personalized FinallyFast bashing, check out this site or just click every link in a Google search of the topic that's not run by Ascentive.

Washingtonians who got bamboozled by FinallyFast can expect an email about their refund from the company within 30 days as long as they:

1) Purchased any Ascentive product in the past two years, 2) paid for both a back-up CD and the company's Extended Download Service and 3) didn't use either the back-up CD or the Extended Download Service.

One can understand why the product's commercials may have been so effective. Just try and watch the clip below and stop yourself from pulling out your credit card.
