On August 4, we remember the Golden Gate, Florida man who was breeding golden retrievers and labradors. The dogs and puppies, numbering over 49, including some pregnant females, were spread between, adults to the DAS, and mom's with pups going to the Humane Society in Naples. This was stated to be related to a foreclosure on his property. Later it was discovered that he had been cited numerous times for having this a poor breeding facility without some proper legal documents. Removal of the dogs was not for the reasons originally stated in it's entirety.
Speaking to a
DAS employee. Michelle, 16-17 of the adults were adopted. That is a sizeable percentage.
The
bad news, however, is the puppies at the Humane Society have broken with a virus. The deadly parvo virus has taken the lives of 14 of the 16 puppies at the time of this writing. The two that have survived so far have been taken to a 24 hour facility where they can receive continuous medical care. The outlook is poor for their recovery. Apparently the mothers of the puppies are believed to be carrying the illness, as reported by
Fox 4 News.
Parvo is a virus frequently fatal to puppies, while adult dogs have a more developed immune system and can fight off the greatest disease issues. Puppies with Parvo normally vomit, have diarrhea, sometime bloody, and an exceptionally strong, foul odor. This usually accompanied with lethargy, and fever (normal canine temperature is 101-102f) of 102.5 or above. The seriousness of this cannot be understated, immediate medical attention is required to save your pet, puppy or adult. Puppies should be vaccinated usually starting at six weeks and continued with boosters until the pup is 16 weeks. Particular breeds seem to have a lower immunity to this life threatening virus, included in this list would be Rottweilers, Pitbulls, as well as a variety of others. Generally the disease is passed through feces.
Hopefully the two remaining pups will survive, bless the babies that have passed. Due to the opinion that the parvo came from the mothers, according to the Humane Society report on
Fox News 4, DAS should contact all of the new adoptees of the dogs they had to inform them of the illness potential. Quite a few of those dogs were just pups themselves. May no more of these poor dogs suffer any more than the squalor in which they were raised.
