‘Help Desk’ offers computer repair – Evansville Courier & Press
Did you know that there are students at Henderson County High School who will fix your computer for free?
Donations are appreciated, of course, for the Henderson County High School Community Help Desk, which began as a pilot program for school employees about two years ago.
But now the help desk is being opened up to the community.
This means that students in the school's Career and Technical Education unit who have been trained in information technology can help you with data recovery, operating system upgrades, virus/malware/spyware/adware removal, security updates, hardware upgrades, software upgrades and system optimization services.
All you have to do is call the school at 831-8895 to schedule an appointment, or you can email ctetechsquad@henderson.kyschools.us
Here's an example of how it works: Say you want to install more memory on your computer, but you don't know much beyond that.
If you bring your computer into the help desk, the students will assess your computer system, give you a list of recommendations and will tell you where you can purchase any necessary equipment, like a memory module.
Then you would bring those purchased items into the help desk, where the students would install them for you — all for free.
Donations help purchase equipment for the help desk operations.
"This provides an opportunity (for students) to do hands-on learning, to get an understanding of what it's like to work in the computer industry, and to work with customers," said Brian Bailey, the student transition coordinator for the CTE unit.
Dylan Payne, 18, works on the help desk, and he said that hands-on experience is invaluable.
He, incidentally, has taken computer classes since his sophomore year in IT Essentials, CISCO I, CISCO II, web design, and in the IT Help Desk. The senior is also certified in Strata, IC3 and I Critical Thinking.
"You're learning more when you are actually doing it because you see how it actually works," he added.
