After your computer reboots you will not be able to access your usual desktop screen. Instead, a Windows Accelerating Utility screen will pop-up, asking for your permission to scan the computer. Once given the permission, another fake scan bar will appear and once the fake scan is completed Windows Accelerating Utility will display numerous threats on your computer that do not exist. The malware suggests that you cannot remove these threats without the full version of the Windows Accelerating Utility, thus the malware asks for your credit card information. Under no circumstance should you give away any of your information nor purchase the full version of this so called utility because it’s nothing else than a forgery.
Note that you will not be able to access your Windows desktop screen unless you complete the fake scan.
Windows Accelerating Utility Removal Guide
In order to completely remove Windows Accelerating Utility from your system you will need to download RKill, Shell.reg and Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM). In case you cannot access the internet by using the infected system you will have to find a computer that works and download the necessary programs from there, transferring them afterwards via CD/DVD, USB flash drive or any other removable devices.
- In order to start the removal process first you will need to kill the Windows Accelerating Utility process. In order to do so you will need to run RKill. This program will start scanning your system and automatically close any Windows Accelerating Utility related processes. Be patient, RKill could take some time to finish scanning your system.
In case you will be presented with warnings suggesting that RKill is a threat to your computer do not worry. It’s simply the Windows Accelerating Utility trying to save itself.
Remember that in order to access the desktop you will first need to let Windows Accelerating Utility to perform the fake scan. After that you will be able to close the window by pressing X in top right corner. After RKill finishes do NOT reboot your computer all you will have to start all over again.
- The next step is to fix some Windows Registries else you won’t be able to access your normal desktop again if you start removing the Windows Accelerating Utility Trojan before rewriting the Windows Registry Shell value. In order to fix your registries you will have to run Shell.reg and allow it to merge the data once it will prompt you to do so.
- Now with the removal. Install MBAM by running mbam-setup.exe. Whilst the installation process is in progress, make sure you check the radio buttons named Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes’Anti-Malware. Once the installation process finishes, reboot your computer if prompted so.
- Once MBAM starts it will update itself. Be patient and let it do all the necessary updates. After the update is complete click on the Scanner tab and make sure that the Perform Quick Scan option is enabled. Click the Scan button and let MBAM finish scanning your computer.
- After the scan is complete you will be shown a message box. Press OK and then click the Show Results button. Make sure that every infection is checked and then press the Remove Selected button. After MBAM finishes disinfecting your system it might prompt you for a restart. If so, please reboot.
Your computer should now be clean.
