According to sanjose.bizjournals.com, a newly discovered computer virus, which has been dubbed the “Kneber botnet virus” after the username that links the infected systems worldwide, has reportedly attacked nearly 75,000 computers in 2,500 organizations across the globe.
Herndon-based Internet security firm NetWitness, said that the new “Kneber botnet” virus gathers people’s login credentials to email systems, social networking sites and online financial systems. The information is then used by hackers to break into people’s accounts etc.
A report at msnbc.msn.com, says that NetWitness say the attack was first discovered back in January, during a routine deployment of the NetWitness software. The company now says that the “Kneber botnet” has managed to snag 68,000 corporate login details.
On top of the corporate login credentials, the Kneber botnet has also managed to get hold of personal access information to email systems such as Yahoo and Hotmail, online banking sites and social networking sites such as Facebook.
In a recent statement, Yoran said that conventional malware protection and signature-based intrusion detection systems are inadequate, for addressing the Kneber botnet or many other advanced threats. This may cause detection and removal problems, for those affected.
