Meet Jorge Rios-Marti – Duke University
Durham, NC - Name: Jorge Rios-Marti
Position: Information technology manager for the OIT Service Desk at the Link
Years at Duke: 6
What I do at Duke is: manage the walk-up OIT service location at the Link in Perkins Library. We help students, staff and faculty who bring in their computers for virus removal, installing software, completing a NetID password reset, or any other help they need. I manage a staff of five, and also work with 40 to 50 student workers. During the academic year, we are open more than 80 hours a week.
If people want to start a conversation with me, they should ask me about: sports. I like just about any sports. I kicked the field goal to win the state football title for South View High School in Hope Mills, near Fayetteville, back in 1991, and was a kicker for the UNC football team. But now, as long as Duke isn't playing against Carolina, I'll pull for Duke.
If I had $5 million, I would: donate some to charity, but I'd probably also take some and give it to my parents and to my two younger brothers to pay off their houses.
My first ever job was: working for the Employment Security Commission of North Carolina. At one time, my supervisor and I were processing all the unemployment claims in Durham.
The best advice I ever received was: 'be yourself and work hard to reach your goals.' That was what my high school football coach always said.
What I love about Duke is: the friendly attitude at the Link. Our people don't give up until they've found solutions for the customers. I like interacting face to face with so many people - staff, student workers, students, faculty, anyone who comes to the desk.
When I'm not at work, I like to: spend time with my four God-kids, the children of two of my best friends. Two of the God-kids are 3 year-olds, and two are 18-month-old twins. But when I'm at home, I often log in to work and help out with tickets or things I know I can knock out to make it easier for everyone the next day.
If I could have one superpower, it would be: the ability to fly, just so I can get to places faster and see more. I travelled a lot when I was little because my Dad was in the military.
Something most people don't know about me is: I'm from Puerto Rico. My family moved away when I was only 3, but my parents still have a home in Puerto Rico. When we were growing up, we spent four to six weeks every summer in Isabella, a town in the top left corner of the island. My mom still cooks great Puerto Rican food, like meat-filled pasteles [similar to a tamale], flan and tembleque [coconut pudding].
Rios-Marti was nominated by a colleague during the "10 Days of Duke Today" campaign when Duke Today Working@Duke launched. Got someone special in mind for Blue Devil of the Week? Nominate your colleague.
