Melron Electronics in Tecumseh changes hands – Adrian Daily Telegram
TECUMSEH, Mich. —
When Melron Electronics in Tecumseh was put up for sale several months ago, Roland von Kaler faced a choice: either purchase the business himself, or have to find a new place for his own self-storage business’s office, which was located inside the electronics store.
He chose the former, and became the new owner of Melron Electronics.
Melron, at 102 W. Chicago Blvd., has been in operation since the mid-1980s, said von Kaler, “so now we’re serving a second generation of customers.”
The business does a full range of PC repairs, program installation and virus removal, along with building new systems to customer specifications, repairing flat-screen TVs and monitors, selling laptops and something relatively new: fixing Xbox 360s. “We’ve figured out how to fix them when they overheat,” von Kaler said.
“We try to get into a lot of new things,” he added.
In most cases, he said, a repair can be done within two days. And if a customer can’t bring his or her computer into the shop for the repair, one of Melron’s two technicians can make a house call.
All work is fully guaranteed if things aren’t fixed right the first time. “(Customers) will get top-notch service,” von Kaler said.
The benefit to a business like his, he said, is that customers “can go to a local place and say, ‘Please help me,’ instead of having to go to (the manufacturer).”
While owning an electronics sales and service operation is a new thing for von Kaler, it’s far from his first business. Additionally, besides the storage business, he owns a number of apartments and condominiums in the area.
The 78-year-old von Kaler, a mechanical engineer by training, came to this country from Germany in 1957.
“It was adventure,” he said. “I wanted to stay two or three years and go back, and I never did.”
His first job was with Massey Ferguson. In 1964, he was hired by Ray Herrick to run Tecumseh Products’ Peerless Gear division, where he amassed 27 patents during his career.
Finally, he retired from Peerless, but not working didn’t agree with him much. “I couldn’t stay retired,” he said.
Although he’d like to expand his customer base into the commercial side of things, business is going quite well when it comes to Melron’s private customers, many of whom have already given him repeat business.
“They’re happy,” he said, “and if they’re not, we’ll make them happy.”
Melron Electronics is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Its phone number is 423-7977. The Web site is www.melronelectronics.net.
