Move Over, Geek Squad, McAfee Total Care is Here – PC Magazine
Traditionally, this service has been met by either the local computer shop or corporate services like the Geek Squad, Best Buy's in-house service arm. On Thursday, McAfee stepped in with McAfee Total Care, a remote-services help desk that matches consumers with a McAfee expert.
To access McAfee Total Care Services, consumers can visit the Total Care Web site or call (866) 966-8478. They are not designed to replace McAfee's existing 30-day free support services, the company said.
McAfee announced three services, one of which will begin to be available next year.
McAfee's $89.85 Virus Removal Service, as the name suggests, removes malware and spyware remotely, via an Internet connection, and ads whatever patches are necessary to the operating system, plus a popup blocker. McAfee Virus Removal Service is available globally to customers in the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia with availability expected in more countries in 2010.
McAfee's PC Tune-Up Service, priced at $49.95, can clean the PC of left-over drivers and DLL files, and defragments the hard disk. The service also adds tools. This service is available in the United States, Canada, Australia, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia with availability expected in more countries in 2010.
In 2010, McAfee will add a "total care" service package, that will help users set up new PCs. It will be able to remotely install and customize McAfee Internet security software, and remove trial software and unwanted programs to free up memory and make the PC run even faster.
