With the market flooded with innumerable PC protection software, how does one choose and buy the right one? Different issues are addresses by different products, and at present there isn’t single software which can handle the entire protection of the PC, end to end. However, some of the key products offering protection to the PC include Disk clean-up utilities, Firewall monitors, Malware removal programs, Encryption software, Backup utilities, Disk defragmentation utility and Registry cleaning utility.

Some of the key factors will now discussed succinctly, including, Registry cleaning utility shows every scan which takes place and enables the user to determine which of the entries are safe to allow or delete. Ideally it contains details as to why a particular entry has been marked for deletion, and also whether it is safe to delete the specified entry. This will help uninformed users to delete the right entries. Malware removal programs also include anti-virus software as well as anti-spyware and anti-adware removal programs. With frequent updates the malware definitions are kept on alert to combat virus and malware attacks. Backup utilities ensure that important data is not lost during system crashes and hence can be retrieved and restored. Extensive backup ensures that the user can copy the entire hard drive, backup of system files, as well as backup of important or specific documents and user files. Also, there must be options to choose the media where the backup files are to be stored, in order to provide quick access in the event of a system crash.
Disk clean-up utilities are important because they eliminate the extra space that taken up by temporary files, caches and even unused desktop icons. The utilities have been design to identify and mark the damaged or bad sectors on the hard drive so that system can remove those files and maintain valid storage space. Disk defragmentation utility creates an ordered allocation of the sectors within the system, by assigning the parts where data should be stored, areas which can show empty sectors, and bad sector areas. This makes it easier to clean up the disk. There should be an option to create a backup of files which are going to move as a precaution against the files being corrupted during the move.
