England based Internet Security firm Sophos has launched Sophos Mobile Control, a product targeted at security for mobile devices and smartphones. The product is an addition to the company's existing line-up of endpoint Security and data protection repertoire that includes Sophos Anti-Virus, Sophos Client Firewall, and Sophos Disk Encryption. Sophos Mobile Control provides data protection fpr businesses over a wide spectrum of smartphone's and handheld devices like Apple's iPhone and iPad, the vast array of Google's Android based portables, and the growing breeds of Windows Mobile devices.

It must be marked that Sophos does not sell anti-virus and anti-spam solutions for home users, but focuses on the enterprise security solutions. The new product Sophos Mobile Control helps businesses in mobile device management, giving corporate networks comprehensive administrative control of securing, monitoring, and configuring attached devices in the domain, just like they would enforce policies on the employee laptops and desktops.

Considering the mobility of portable devices and smartphones, Sophos Mobile Control allows companies to enforce policies over air; for example in case of a theft of a handset, the company can remotely lock the device or even wipe of its contents at will. It also features a web based console providing complete central configuration of security policies and settings and regular administrative policies like the removal of unwanted features within the smartphones.

The examples of the scope of administrative control include enforcing password policies, moderate application installation, preventing access to camera, browser, and bandwidth hogs like YouTube and social networking websites. Sophos Mobile Control also endeavours to eliminate administrative burden with a self-service portal. Using the portal, employees can register new devices and lock or wipe lost phones. The security solution also provides access to corporate email through a secure gate that enables on company registered devices to access sensitive email.
