Two Kern County residents die from West Nile Virus – KSBY San Luis Obispo News
California Department of Public Health announced Monday that two Kern County residents have become the first reported deaths linked to the West Nile virus this year.
Both Kern County men, ages 37 and 86, have not yet been identified. It's also not clear when the men died.
State health officials say the West Nile Virus is most commonly transmitted to humans and animals through a mosquito bite.
They say less than one percent of people will develop serious neurological illnesses, and usually those 50 years of age and older, are more at risk of getting sick.
In July, a man tested positive for West Nile in Santa Barbara County. Just last month, a dead bird found in Cambria also tested positive for the virus.
