If you have noticed a program called Ultra Defragger (UltraDefragger) has appeared on your computer recently, you may be curious where it came from, and if you should spring for the full blown version. You are probably wondering what it is as you don’t remember downloading it. Here is some very important information on this product, or software, that you need to be aware of, for your own and your computers safety. The program will give you fake alerts in order to convince you that you need it. Don’t fall for it.
Some of the alerts may include, “Critical Error! – Damaged hard drive clusters found. Your data is at severe risk.” Or, “Critical Error – Hard Drive not found.” They all look like typical Windows error messages, but they are an incumbent part of the scam. So if you see one of these messages, or a similar one, just ignore it. You will get pointers to remove them later in this article.

First restart your computer in safe mode. If you don’t know how to do this, just shut your computer down and then turn it back on. After five seconds, start pressing the F8 key repeatedly. This will bring you to a black screen with text on it. You should see Safe Mode highlighted above Safe Mode with networking below it. Use the up, down keys to navigate. Select the Networking option and hit the enter key to start your computer in that mode. By selecting the Networking option, this allows you to access the internet while in Safe Mode; otherwise, you will have no internet capability. Networking is obviously very useful when you are trying to remove viruses.
You can not attempt to remove the infection(s). First step is to run rkill to stop any of the processes that support this infection. On Windows Vista or 7, you will need to right click the software and choose ‘run as administrator’. rkill will run without any input from you, and will be completed in just a few seconds. Now is the time to install the Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware software.
Once you have that installed, you need to get the latest updates. So click on the update tab and select ‘update now’. This requires that you are connected to the internet. It will download the latest definitions for the program. Once this is done, you are ready to run a scan, so click on the ‘scanner tab’ and select ‘perform full scan’, then select your C drive, and click the scan button.
It will take a while for this scan to run, like any anti virus software that is doing a full scan. Most people have a lot of files to go through on their computers these days with the massive hard drives we have. Once it is completed, click on ‘show results’ to show all of the results it found. Select them all and select ‘remove selected’. You will probably have to start your computer again, but when you do, the Ultra Defragger infection should be gone.
