Is Having The Kb958644 Patch Sufficient In Stopping Conficker?
I know that the KB958644 patch will stop the spread of Conficker, but will it stop the effects of it? That is, will it prevent remote code from running on an already infected machine on April 1?
If you have the latest Windows security updates it will stop your computer getting infected, but it won’t help if you already had this or any other malicious software on your computer before the patch was installed. Conficker seems to have been more effective at grabbing media headlines than it has been at causing malicious damage, but the ones you really need to worry about are the really damaging ones that don’t get so much media attention. At any time there are at least 20 of these actively doing the rounds with new ones coming out all the time. It’s a mixture of viruses, worms, trojans and other malicious software including spyware and adware.
The only way you can be sure is to do a full system scan with a good antivirus or internet security program that has the latest definition updates installed. If you don’t have one, or if the one you have is ineffective, go to http://www.datadefender.net for reviews, comparisons and download links for the latest software from the major antivirus companies. All of them do free trials, so you can check your system for free today with one of the best programs available. You then have 15, 30 or 60 days to decide whether or not to buy a licence (depending which program you choose). Don’t waste your time with free antivirus software – some of it is quite good, but it won’t detect everything and you could get yourself into a false sense of security by relying on one of these.
here’s great article about conficker worm: http://www.spywarevoid.com/remove-confic…
If you don’t have it then it will protect you.
If you have it nothing will protect you. The variant of Conficker that will get active on April 1st disables antivirus software, prevents you from installing them, blocks Windows Update and access to antivirus sites, online scanners and patch sites.
To remove it you need to either get your drive to a ‘clean’ friend and run an updated antivirus or run an antivirus from a clean, safe bootable CD?DVD.
On the other hand, Conficker C, the April hype, is hard to get infected with. A and B were worms exploting firewall breaches and network exploits, but C is an autorun DLL. If you disable Autorun before plugging in portable media on your PC you should be fairly safe.
On top of that, Conficker is a botnet. It won’t delete files, get private data, launch nukes, etc. It will run background code, run DDoS attacks from your PC, use processor time to hack passwords, stuff like that, but for daily home use you won’t ever notice it’s there (save for not being able to install antivirus or access antivirus sites).
just a hyped virus..
didn’t saw any infected system yet, looks like average anti-virus packages can contain this worm.
i’ve heard you wont be infected by this worm unless if you’re runnding the windows server process.
check if you’re running it by: start -> run -> type ’services.msc’
check if the “server” service is running, disable this, and you will be fine
No its not as basic security on windows includes firewall and antivirus to protect yourself from other threat aside from conficker.

From what I understand, it only prevents you getting infected so if you’re already infected it may not prevent the effects. However, most antivirus programs will be able to remove the virus if your computer is infected.
Once conficker is actually in your computer, it will make a copy of that patch on the computer. So having the patch won’t help you out too much, if you already have the Conficker bug.
If your infected ,then conficker will make it look like you have the patch. So just download one of the many conficker stompers and scan if you wanna be sure.http://www.mcafee.com/us/enterprise/conf…
Yes it will.
