The Conficker Virus – What Is It And What Does It Do Exactly?
If you are reading this article then you obviously have access to a computer and the internet.
Both are amazing inventions that have revolutionised our lives to the point where we would probably struggle to live without them.
Some people rely on their computers for communicating with friends and family, others for running their highly profitable online businesses.
So what would happen if a deadly computer virus put an end to all that?
Introducing The Conficker Virus
The Conficker virus first came to prominence back in October of 2008.
Since then it has gone on to infect a huge number of computers around the world – maybe as many as 15 million of them according to some security analysts.
There are five different variations of Conficker at this time – A, B, C, D and E.
What Has Conficker Done So Far?
So far the worst effect of this worm has been peddling fake antivirus software and enslaving infected machines into a botnet.
However, millions of infected computers means huge potential profits for those behind the virus so it is widely believed that Conficker will yet do something downright nasty in the not too distant future.
How Will The Confiker Virus Affect Me?
As I previously mentioned, the effects of Conficker are minimal so far but I do expect there to be serious consequences for infected machines in the future.
For now, you are likely to know that your PC has become infected if you experience any of the following -
Your backup service stops working You find you cannot visit security websites on the internet Recent and important documents on your system have been erased Your internet connection has slowed down (a sign that you may have been added to a botnet) Your hair turns yellow and your teeth fall out.
Ok, so maybe not the last point, but I’m sure you can now appreciate that the dormant Conficker virus is a bit of a pain already even if it doesn’t develop into anything more sinister.
