Lake County has a population of about 35,000 kids who are eligible for one of the safest vaccines ever created, yet only 2,805 students have taken advantage of the offer since 2006. My daughter is one.

The vaccine is Gardasil, created by pharmaceutical giant Merck, and it is recommended for girls and boys from 9 to 26. It's free at the health department for kids from 9 through 18.

This is a deal worth $453 — that's the cost of the vaccine though the health department after a person turns 19. The cost through a private physician can top $600. What an amazing opportunity for the younger kids.

After a series of three simple shots over six months, your teen is protected from a sexually transmitted bug called HPV — human papillomavirus. That critter comes in 40 varieties, and Gardisil protects against only four, but they are the most dangerous ones.

They cause 75 percent of the cervical cancers, 90 percent of the cases of genital warts, 70 percent of vaginal cancers, 50 percent of vulvular cancers and some cancers of the anus, penis and back of the throat.

You're squirming, aren't you? I can feel it. Do not spit out the Wheaties. You don't want to think about your precious 11-year-old daughter, who looks so sweet when she crashes out in bed hugging her favorite stuffed animal, having — yich — sex with anybody.

Stop it. This is not about sex. This is about disease and about making sure your kid is protected. It's about putting yourself to a little inconvenience to take your child to a clinic in exchange for a healthier future.

If you think the solution is for your offspring simply to avoid being promiscuous, you're wrong. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that 50 percent of Americans will contract some form of HPV during their lifetime, and other researchers now are estimating that figure is closer to 80 percent. About 20 million currently have an HPV virus. Six million people a year contract it, and 74 percent of them are ages 15 to 24.

However, unless it's the form that causes genital warts in both sexes, the infected person probably never will know. Most of the HPV cases simply go away without causing trouble.

But some don't. And there's no way to predict whose body will chew up the virus and spit it out and who will end up with a vicious form of cancer. Because infected people usually don't realize something is wrong, they go about unwittingly passing HPV on to their next sex partner.

Getting HPV is all about the skin. The virus can be transmitted during sexual intercourse but also during oral sex or genital-to-genital contact. Straight, gay — HPV isn't picky about its host. A person can have HPV years after sexual contact with an infected partner.

That's why the focus is on tweens and young teens.

"We try to catch them before they become sexually active," said Dr. Claude Jones, the health department's medical director.

About 35 million doses of the vaccine have been given across the United States since June 2011, and only 18,000 minor reactions, such as a rash or sore arm, have been reported.

"Its safety and efficacy have been tested and proven over and over and over," Jones said. "No studies show that Gardasil causes serious effects."

Kids going into the seventh grade are required to have a series of vaccines, including those against Hepatitis B, measles and mumps. That's the perfect time to get Gardasil, too.

Parents can schedule the first shot with the Leesburg clinic at 352-360-6548 or the Umatilla one at 352-771-5500. Starting in July, Gardasil will be offered at a new Clermont clinic, too.

C'mon, Mom and Dad. Your tax dollars are being used to provide this vaccine. This is one of those rare times where you get to reach out and grab the benefit.

Remember those infamous Mac versus PC television spots that cast the PC as a virus and malware magnet? You remember the ones: Actor Justin Long personified the Mac, and always spoke in smug, superior tones to comedian John Hodgman, who represented the perpetually perplexed, problem-plagued, and patch-prone PC. The ad campaign was a devastatingly effective one, and helped define Microsoft Windows -- and Windows Vista in particular -- as a buggy OS for socially inept losers.

The ads were often technically inaccurate and unfair, but they went unchallenged by Microsoft for so long that many less-informed viewers bought the line that the Mac was invulnerable to viruses. In political parlance, Apple defined Microsoft long before the slumbering marketing department in Redmond even realized that long-term damage was being done.

Since the heyday of the Mac vs PC campaign, things have changed. Windows 7 is arguably one of the most hardened and regularly updated OSes available, and now Apple and the Macintosh are in the headlines for fighting off malware and patching vulnerable software.

Apple Updates OS 10.5 with 'Flashback' Removal Kit
One of the biggest security stories to emerge this year was the arrival of the 'Flashback' malware, which initially appeared in late 2011. Designed to take advantage of unpatched vulnerabilities in Java for the Mac, the flashback spread quickly through thousands of largely undefended Mac computers. Russian security vendor Dr.WEB did some recent analysis of the Flashback botnet and revealed that more than 650,000 Macs were potentially infected with the malware.

Flashback is noteworthy because it heralds the collapse of the specious argument that the Mac has always been inherently superior to Windows PCs when it came to being resistant to viruses. Flashback proves that the Mac can be just as vulnerable as the PC when malware and virus authors focus their efforts on it, and the attitude of many Mac users -- who mistakenly believe that the Mac simply doesn't get malware or viruses -- has probably helped Flashback have a larger impact that it should have.

Let's be honest: The Mac's alleged resistance to malware and viruses has always had more to do with the fact that Windows PCs presented a much larger (and more economical) target for virus and malware writers than the comparatively miniscule installed base of Apple computers. With Apple selling more Macs than ever before, it wouldn't be a stretch to say that we'll probably start seeing more Mac viruses and malware in the future. If you have a friend or colleague that still believes that the Mac is immune to viruses or malware, please show them this article.

In order to combat the spread of Flashback, Apple has issued security updates for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and OS X 10.5 Leopard, and released a Flashback removal tool that helps users remove Flashback from their systems if they've been infected.

Quicktime for Windows Patched
In somewhat related news, Apple also released an update for their popular QuickTime software to update it to version 7.2.2. A posting on the Apple security website states that the update was meant to fix a QuickTime vulnerability that could be exploited by users "visiting a maliciously crafted website" that could remotely install code that could "lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution."

Spend one hour with Prototype 2 and you’ll understand exactly what is so appealing and entertaining about Activision’s open-world action-adventure title.

Serving as the direct sequel to 2009’s Prototype, Prototype 2 brings back all of the things that made the original a hit and adds to the party, making the second go-around with the Mercer virus one of the most fun experiences of 2012 to date.

Prototype 2 puts you in control of Sgt. James Heller, who returns to NYZ following a tour in Iraq to find his wife and daughter slaughtered following the second outbreak of the Mercer Virus. Heller, who is assigned to one of NYZ’s Red Zones, quickly comes across Alex Mercer, the first game’s protagonist. Heller is then infected by Mercer and the events that unfold pit the player against Mercer, Blackwatch and Gentek, with very little direction in terms of who to really trust.

Activision

Prototype 2’s story while fairly entertaining, does leave something to be desired, and I believe this has something to do with the lack of diversity in the mission-style format in which the single-player experience unfolds. While there are additional objectives that can be achieved during each mission, earning the player more experience and upgrades, there is never any real need to complete these extra tasks in order to finish any particular mission.

Despite being a bit bland in terms of mission variety, Prototype 2 does introduce a unique story-telling method that adds a layer to consuming targets. In addition to being able top assume their identities, Heller will often advance the story and retrieve key pieces of information by absorbing key figures throughout the duration of the game. The telling of the story via memories is one of the many improvements Prototype 2 has made to enhance the overall experience.

What Prototype 2 also does very well, and this is the franchise’s bread and butter, is make you feel nearly invincible and allow you to utilize your various powers and unique skill set in battle and while traversing NYZ. Once you are cut loose in NYZ, Heller can leap high into the air, glide from building to building, scale skyscrapers and leap over obstacles in a super-parkour style. Even when you aren’t playing through a mission or completing a specific task, just travelling through NYZ is a rewarding experience.

As I wrote in my preview of Prototype 2, there are several new transformations, mutations and attacks that players can utilize while controlling Heller. Also, players can now equip two different powers at the same time, allowing for a more controlled, technical and strategic approach to different situations. Switching between these powers and utilizing them is easier than ever before with the removal of the move store. Instead, players will now level up and can access their different abilities via the Power Wheel, which works similarly to the skill/weapon wheel seen in the Mass Effect series. Overall, the combat and upgrade system has been improved upon immensely to make things feel more fluid and comfortable than they did in the last game.

From an audio and visual standpoint, Prototype 2 certainly impresses and earns its Mature rating. The game is graphic in terms of monsters and mutations and there is a fair amount of gore associated with almost everything that you do combat-wise in the game. The game’s soundtrack and voice acting are superb, although there are times that the dialogue does seem to be lacking and cliché-filled. Nevertheless, Prototype 2 carries a production level that we have come to expect from an Activision title.

With the introduction of Radnet, there is a higher level of replayability in Prototype 2 than there was in the original. Radnet introduces new mini-games throughout the course of your playthrough that provide challenges to complete in order to gain unlockables and other in-game perks.

Final Thoughts: Prototype 2 is one of the most fun experiences I have had with a game this year. While the story and missions at times can become a bit bland/cliché, they are engaging enough to keep gamers entertained for the duration of the game. Prototype 2 has tweaked combat and navigation to make everything more fluid and comfortable to the point where you can spend hours just wreaking havoc across NYZ without ever finding yourself overwhelmed or frustrated.

Final Grade: B/B+

Prototype 2 is Rated M for Mature and is available for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC

Apple has released a tool for users still running OS X Leopard. The tool will purge Leopard users machines of the Flashback malware that has been plaguing Mac computers over the last few weeks.

Apple released an update to kill the Flashback malware several weeks ago, in early April. If you're running anything earlier than Mac OS X v10.5.8, you'll also need to update your OS before you can install these two new updates.

Word of the Flashback botnet first emerged on April 4, after Russian antivirus company Dr. Web claimed that more that 600,000 Macs -- most of which were located in the United States and Canada -- were infected with a trojan horse virus called "Flashback," or rather, "BackDoor.Flashback.39." Dr. Web's report said that 56.6-percent of the infected computers were in the United States (303,449 infected hosts), and 19.8-percent resided in Canada (106,379 infected hosts). The United Kingdom followed with 12.8-percent and Australia with 6.1-percent. Other infected Macs were spread across many other countries, including France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Brazil.

Apple has released patches that defend users of its older Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system against security threats.

Monday's security fixes help defend Mac users stuck on the two-year-old operating system against assaults by the infamous Flashback Trojan. Users of the newer Snow Leopard (10.6) and Lion (10.7) operating systems received equivalent fixes last month.

Apple's Leopard Flashback Removal Security Update is designed to clean up Macs running the legacy OS which are not yet running an anti-virus package. In addition, the security update disables Safari's Java plugin by default.

Meanwhile Leopard Security Update 2012-003 disables older versions of Adobe Flash Player, encouraging users to get the latest version directly from Adobe's website.

Both updates can be applied via the Software Update feature built into Mac OS X, but will only "take" if the latest version of that particular track of the operating system, Mac OS X Leopard version 10.5.8, has already been applied.

Apple is acting to prevent users of legacy versions of its operating system from harbouring the Flashback Trojan, which tarnished its reputation for security as a result. Such support is unlikely to continue indefinitely and likely to disappear entirely once Apple updates Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. ®

If you're one of them, you'll be glad to know that Apple has finally issued a Leopard fix that comes with a removal tool for the virus afflicting its big cats. In addition to a 1.23MB Flashback update, Apple also released a second 1.11MB fix for Leopard that disables versions of Adobe Flash Player that don't have the requisite security updates. Both should further whittle down the number of Apple computers affected by the Flashback trojan. For the actual updates, feel free to pounce on the source links below.

Apple is no longer the “safe” choice for computer shoppers as various malicious software downloads have become available over the last several months. Now with the Flashback trojan infecting more than 500,000 Apple computer systems via the Mac OS X operating platform, Apple has turned to computer virus experts Kaspersky Labs to help them better protect Apple computers.

Apple recently released two Flashback removal tools however the number of machines still infected remains high.

Nikolai Grebennikov, CTO of Kaspersky spoke to Computing on Monday and revealed that OS X is a “really vulnerable” operating system and because of that fact “Apple recently invited us to improve its security. We’ve begun an analysis of its vulnerabilities, and the malware targeting it.”

The CTO then attacks his new partners, claiming that Apple is lax on security and slow to fix issues, specifically the Java patch that was eventually released to combat the Flashback trojan.

If Apple being targeted on the PC front is not bad enough, Grebennikov believes the company will next face attacks on the iOS level as malware becomes more readily available on iPhone and iPad devices before the end of 2012.

Apple has often used its “more secure” iOS system to attack Google Android which has witnessed its own set of attacks over the last twelve months as hackers have targeted the Android OS mainly because it is the most popular mobile OS currently available on the open market.

Are you surprised to learn that Apple has been so lax with its security protocols over the years?
