Virus Protection Tips – 7 Types of Malicious Software That Can Easily Infect Your PC

Going online without any protection is the same with going to the battlefield without any weapon. Did you know that 90% of computer users in the U.S are infected by malware?

Malware are software that have malicious intent and can do lot of things. It can steal your username, password, take control of your PC, slow down your PC and many more.

Even big companies also use malware in their product. For example, Sony put a rootkit inside their CD to prevent piracy. Even though they are a big company, using malicious software inside their product is unacceptable.

There are few types of malware and below is the list for 7 types of malicious software and a brief description of each:

1. Spyware

As the name implies, spyware is software that will spy on everything you do, which websites you’re visiting, your browsing habit, installing additional software and changing your homepage. You can remove it by installing antispyware.

2. Adware

Few books have different opinions on adware, some categorized it as spyware but displays advertising, others put adware into their own category. Whatever the category is, adware is software that displays advertising and it can be installed legally inside your PC. The mass amount of pop-ups that you’re experiencing while surfing the internet can be caused by adware.

3. Rootkit

Rootkit is software that can hide it presence inside your PC. Even your antivirus will not be able to detect it. However, if you schedule your antivirus to scan before your Windows boot up, then you might be able to get a chance to remove it. Another way that you can try is to use the Rootkit Revealer by SysInternal.

4. Trojan Horse

Trojan Horse is software named after the famous Trojan Horse in the Greek Mythology. As the name implies, this malicious software will only do his job if you execute it and usually disguise itself as a folder to trick you.

5. Worm

A computer worm is software that can infect your PC and will turn your PC into a zombie computer. A zombie computer is a computer that can be controlled by the hackers and usually is used to execute the DDoS attack and for example, the Conficker Worm.

6. Virus

I think this is one of the most famous malicious software. A computer virus is software that can replicate itself in your system and will infect certain file types and making it useless. There are also viruses that infect .doc files or .swf files.

The term virus also used to describe other types of malware such as Trojan Horse and Computer Worms. Technically, it’s not the same.

7. Keylogger

Keylogger is software that records everything that you type including your username, password, credit card information and many more. Every time you use your keyboard, it will record everything and send it back to its creator.

As you can see, there are lots of online threats that can infect your PC and the only way we will be able to fight them is by gaining knowledge. Knowledge is power and it’s really true in terms of computer safety.

Computer Security: a Matter of Concern and Tips to Avoid Trouble

With so much of today?s business being transacted online, computer security is a major issue affecting businesses and consumers. For online businesses, there can be problems in the form of stolen credit card information, mailing or personal information. If you are selling information, your content may be hacked into and copied. This affects the business and customer adversely, since the customer is likely to blame the online business. This erodes the image of your business and discourages other customers from trusting you with their information. No one likes their email inbox to be bombarded with viruses and spam. If they feel that your site has something to do with it, your business and reputation will suffer long term damage. To avoid problems with your business?s computer security, follow the guidelines listed below.

Never allow external storage devices:?

Do not permit anyone to take data out of your system in any form of external storage device, such as floppy disks, CDs etc. for any reason. Obviously, this compromises your safety and that of your customers.

Limit employee access:?

Restrict employee access to files, folders and areas within the system that they require in their day to day work. Do not allow anyone to gain access to any information that they do not require. Make sure that you install systems that lock out employees who do not have authorization.

Third party outsourcing:?

Outsource your payment system to a third party such as PayPal, so that your liability is reduced in case of any computer security problems. This third party will have the necessary technological support to ensure that the customer and your business are safe. But to be sure of this, you will need to do a thorough check on your selected provider or choose a reputable one.

Check on your technology vendor:?

It is important to ensure that your technology vendor has taken steps to protect the server and the software in your system appropriately with firewalls etc. If it is possible and affordable, look into getting a third party security audit of the system from both ends ? the server provider & the software at your end since leaks may be from either end. Pages that contain sensitive data should be appropriately protected with software security locks.

Newsletter email lists:?

If you have a newsletter, make sure that your online business keeps its mailing list secure and that no recipient can tamper with it or gain access to the list. This is essential in protecting the privacy of your customer information.

Affiliations with reputable associations:?

Form affiliations with trusted business and computer security organizations, such as BBBOnline, to ensure that customers feel safe coming to your site. The additional benefit of this is the identification of any flaws in the security through a check up.

Educate customers:?

It is imperative to educate your customers about computer safety. Ensure that they know your online business will not send them emails soliciting information and that if they receive any such mail, they should report it to you at once.

Content:?

Protect your content by ensuring that it is safe behind firewalls and other applications that prohibit unauthorized entry. As for public content, simply provide your visitors with updated and informative content regularly since good quality cannot be copied.

5 Computer Security Threats – Tips To Protect Your PC From Them

There are certain computer security theft programs that get installed in the system without your knowledge and consent.

Why pop-up ads are erratically displayed in the web page?

How about your home page or start page changing every time?

Why do the search results suddenly change and why is the computer dialing out?

Are there chances for you to be a victim of hijackers, keyloggers, adware, spyware and dialers?

Terms Defined

Let us know about the basics of the computer security threats:

1. Hijackers – They are also called hijackware. These are Malware that alter your browser settings. It will take you to the site that you have not asked for. These will help you detect them. The re-direction is an annoying effect of this software. They are often the search pages and start pages for those who pay for their service. This software can slow down the performance of the system and there are chances for the browser to crash.

2. Keyloggers – They are also called as keystroke loggers. The strokes in the keyboard are recorded and later these are reported to the intruders who own the software. The commercial type of keyloggers is used by companies for monitoring purpose. For example, they are used to monitor corporate spies or employee resource use. They are also used by certain people to spy on the bosses and co-workers.

3. Adware – This software plays advertisements or pops out ads every time you open a website. These are not the usual ones you find in a webpage. They pop-up erratically and annoy the user. This way you can detect them. Sometimes even voice messages are received. They are intricately connected to that website but they are the adware program. Clicking on them might install spyware in your system.

4. Spyware – These are programs that get installed in the computer while downloading or even visiting certain websites. They are infectious and once it enters the system it starts tracking all your activity in the including you confidential matters, friends and even passwords. This information is then reported to the intruders.

5. Dialers – They are programs installed in the system that will raise the telephone bill amount to thousands of dollars if affected. This gets installed like the virus (Trojan) or through other codes via attachments in the email or while downloading software. Once it gets installed it will charge lines even while the user isn’t visiting the pay-per-view site in the web. The charges vary from dollars to few pennies per minute.

Novel Writing Made Easy Starts With One Simple Idea

Novel Writing Made Easy has ideas for fiction novel writers. Writing a novel begins with a simple idea. That story idea is what will lead you to your story plot, which is the core of what you need for writing a novel.

Plot is simply the plan of your story. Its the movement of the people in your story through situations and through settings to get to certain goals. Some novel ideas are about a situation. Some ideas about a character. No matter where your idea starts, you must turn the idea into a plot if you want enough story for writing a novel. Remember your goal is to make novel writing easy!

How do you do this? By asking these questions. The two questions you want to ask to transform an idea into a plot are: What if? What if is the seed question to every novel plot. To get a full, complex plot, you must ask this question over and over and over and over.

For example, take the idea of an alternate universe where fat is considered beautiful. To transform this idea into a plot you might ask, What if a very obese woman from our universe ended up in this alternate universe? What would that be like for her? What if she suddenly was considered a drop-dead gorgeous in this alternate universe? What would that be like for her? What if she started losing weight? What if by losing weight, she ends up as unhappy in this universe as she was in the one she was in previously?

Do you see how this works? You play with what if. Once you’ve asked the what if questions several times, you’re ready to ask the next question. Why? The why question expands on your what if questions. You use why to flesh out the scenarios you came up with as a result of asking what if.

For example, one of the what if questions for the alternate universe idea could be, What if the main character started losing weight? To expand on this what if, you would ask, Why? Why would she lose weight? The why would take you back to what if. What if she lost weight because she was so happy that she no longer ate to cover her pain?

That what if would lead you to another why: Why, if she ate to cover pain, wouldn’t she just eat again once she started losing weight in the new reality? Wouldn’t that make her unhappy enough to binge again? Why wouldn’t she just go back to eating a lot? That why, again, will take you to a what if: What if she no longer wants to eat to cover pain-something in her experience of this new universe has changed her. She just doesn’t know what it is. What if? Why? Do you see the process?

You ask what if. That gives you information. Then you ask why. That gives you more information, which leads you back to what if. Its impossible to structure novel plotting much more than this. Its a general brainstorming process that requires your mind to be free and full of possibility. This brainstorming is what will give you the foundation of what you need for writing a novel. Remember Novel Writing Made Easy Starts With One Simple Idea!
