The worm we talk about is the Downadup virus, also known as Conficker. It utilizes weaknesses in Microsoft Windows Server Service and tries to gues username and password on computers and can be autorun when you put a meory stick into your computer.
The worm connects to various net adresses and downloads more malicious software.

Two million machines is estimated getting this worm every day now, and the industry has had enough of it.

Microsoft, Symantec and VeriSign have joined forces with Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to block net adresses that the worm uses to spread its evil mission.

Microsoft promises a bounty for tips the software company about who is behind the worm. If the tips are so good that the creators of the virs is being arrestd, then Microsoft will give 250.000 USD to the one who gave the tip leading to this.

It is not so often Microsoft promises bonuses like this for tips, and it tells how serious this is. Last time Microsoft opened the money bag for tips, was in 2004 when a german teenager was taken for having made the Sasser worm.

How do you protect yourself against this worm?

1. Update with the latest security patches from Microsoft, especially MS08-067, also known as the KB958644 update.

2. Ensure you have proper and powerful usernames and passwords

3. Have control on the use of memory sticks and external hard disks. Turn off the autorun function on your computer.

I enjoy playing games but all this talk about this Conficker virus has got me worried to be playing xbox. Since xbox is a item from microsoft and internet is needed for online play, would it be better for me to keep it off?

Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers.

Spyware often causes “pop-up” advertisements to appear on the user’s screen, without the user’s knowledge or consent. These pop-ups can be quite a headache, and spyware itself often slows down computers to a slow crawl.

Because spyware exists as independent executable programs, they have the ability to monitor keystrokes, scan files on the hard drive, snoop other applications, such as chat programs or word processors, install other spyware programs, read cookies, change the default home page on the Web browser, consistently relaying this information back to the spyware author who will either use it for advertising/marketing purposes or sell the information to another party. I need to know where to download the virus….even the source code if possible for the Conficker virus. I plan on studying the behavior of the worm when it phones home in about 6 hours. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Every search I do for free removal software allows you to download their software, but then they try and charge for the removal part. Are there any absolutely free ones? And if not – how can I get rid of it before it drives me nuts???
