i keep hearing about the worm that might infect you computor called conficker and i just want to know what to do to make sure i dont get it.

1. just unplug the internet
2. if i did unplug it, for how long till i can plug it back in?

I have Utorrent. I’m am not very “computer savvy” so I might need the dumbed down version of how to turn off the remote file sharing to protect against the upcoming Conficker Worm. Microsoft suggests doing this. Thank you!

I thought I would write a quick article about the Conficker/Downadup Worm.

I am sure you have heard about this virus. Here are some facts. Downadup/Conficker has infected an estimated 6% of all PC’s. The worm spreads by exploiting an old security hole in Windows. Also, the worm’s infection count seems to have peaked.

Now, these are some important facts. Let’s take a look at them closely.

To start, Downadup/Conficker has infected 6% of all PC’s. This one is rather obvious. This means you need to make sure you are protected from this! Do you have a good anti-virus program? If you don’t, you need one! You need one for the thousands of other viruses out there, not just this one. For anti-virus protection, I recommend AVG Anti-Virus. There is a free version, so don’t worry.

Let’s take a look at another of those facts. Downadup/Conficker spreads by exploiting an old security hole. This is very important information. This tells us that if you keep Windows updated, you shouldn’t have to worry about this virus. So if you haven’t updated Windows in awhile, do so now! You can do this at WindowsUpdate.com.

Now, let’s look at that other fact I mentioned. Downadup/Conficker’s infection rate seems to be slowing down. This is a good thing. However, there is something else to this virus. Once your computer is infected with Downadup/Conficker, it can download additional viruses. This is very worrying. Although Downadup/Conficker hasn’t started downloading additional viruses, that doesn’t mean it won’t in the future. No one knows if this will happen, or when it might happen. So although at the moment Downadup/Conficker isn’t too harmful, that doesn’t mean it won’t be in the future.

So again, let’s go over the best way to stay protected from Downadup/Conficker. If you are infected with it, get rid of it as quick as possible! Use an anti-virus scanner to get rid of it. Make sure to also update your anti-virus scanner before running a scan. If you’re not sure if you are infected, run an anti-virus scan anyway. You should always have one installed and run scans regularly. Also, remember to keep windows updated! Again, you can do that at WindowsUpdate.com.

Understanding a bit more about how a virus gets on the computer and what you can do to protect yourself is the best way to stay protected. Follow the advice in this article and you should have no problems with Conficker/Downadup. Good luck!
